We moved to Tempe for the weather, that being so much better than in Nebraska.  Careerwise, we hand’t thought that all through quite so well and consequently we’ve both (my husband and I) gone through spates of unemployment the past few years.

But we really like it here, despite the fact that this past summer we found ourselves with bad credit, no extra cash and a refrigerator on the blink.  It was time to replace it, but where would we find the $800 when we barely could afford to keep up payments?

That’s when I did what I always do when scrounging around for merchandise and temp work: I went to Craigslist.  I checked out demolition projects and saw the exact model we wanted in Paradise Valley.  The demolition sale was in three days, but I decided to get there a day early and make a cash offer of $500.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained I always say

There still was the little matter of the $500, but I knew we’d work it out somehow.  

Then my husband reminded me that at least our cars are paid for.  Brilliant man, that husband (so why can’t he get a job??).  I searched the web and found we could get a loan through Car Title Loans in Tempe. They offered me $3000 in a title loan but all I needed was the $500.   I filled out the online application – no crummy stores in scary neighborhoods for me, thank you – and the money came by EFT to my checking account.  Off to Paradise Valley I went, a day early.  I had to bargain with the guy, but in the end we settled at $450.  This is a refrigerator that originally cost $1200 – and I had $50 extra after the dust settled.  

My friends here in Tempe laughed, but auto title loans for home improvements – especially on a deal like this one – saved me more than $700.  Can’t beat that.
